This blog was created to offer our patients important information about dental implants and why they are a superior tooth loss replacement procedure.
In this first offering, we will introduce you to dental implants and the many benefits.
The Dental Implant Process
The dental implants treatment process is usually completed in a series of five stages. 1) initial exam, 2) the fixture, 3) the abutment, 4) the crown, 5) enjoying your beautifully restored smile.
Stage One: Before you can begin the dental implants procedure, you will first schedule a consultation with Dr. Mortensen. During this consultation, the doctor will examine your teeth and determine if dental implants are a good option for you. Measurements of your mouth and teeth will be taken and you will be able to ask questions about the procedure.
Stage Two: Dr. Mortensen will use his expertise to determine the best location to place your dental implant. The first part of the dental implant is a titanium fixture that provides the foundation for your permanent replacement teeth. Once the fixture is implanted directly into the patient’s jawbone, it is allowed to heal and fuse with the bone. This process is called osseointegration. The patient is then allowed to heal for three to six months.
Stage Three: Once the fixture is healed sufficiently, an abutment will be placed onto it. An abutment is the part of your dental implant that acts as an intermediary device between the replacement tooth with the fixture in your jawbone.
Stage Four: The final step of your dental implant procedure is attach the crown to the abutment. This portion is very important as Dr. Mortensen uses his skills and expertise to perfectly match your dental implants to your natural teeth.
Stage Five: Sit back and enjoy your beautifully restored smile!
Dental Implant Science
Dental implant science relies primarily on how an artificial titanium roots fuse with the bone of a patient’s jaw. New tissues thread themselves through tiny holes in the fixture to hold the artificial root firmly in place. This process is called osseointegration and provides a firm foundation for the natural-looking replacement tooth. With proper dental hygiene practices and regular visits to your dentist, your dental implants will not ever need to be replaced.
